STOPAN
STOPAN
I called this book "The Fall of Nazarius," with this title I wanted to pay tribute to Emilian Stanev and his story about Nazarius and Tychic. How a Bogomil icon painter slowly recedes from his faith and becomes a savage.
The gilding is with 24 carat gold leaf, at times just like the text - hidden behind the silver doors made by my father, in which we set 12 rhodolite pink garnets. Four large ones on the doors themselves and another 8 smaller ones onto the base.
The book is sewn on 3 cords and bound with crimson goatskin. The capitals are with two cores sewn to the body and then decorated with red and yellow cotton thread, with small beads attached.
The square was the primary form in this book and that posed a bit of a question as to where to put the clasps and how many should they be? Finally, we decided each side to have a clasp, making a total of three plus a faux base on the side of the covers facing the spine.
It is written as a braid, just to make things a little more difficult, like the text under the interstitials in old manuscripts.
I made the paper for this book myself, folded it, and wrote in red ink all 200 pages with my thoughts and anxieties about what was true in life and what wasn't.
A binding of the Four Gospel, sewn on three cords and bound in dark red goatskin with sewn leather mosaic.
All pieces are made from different-colored vegetable-tanned goatskin. They are hand sewn with linen thread and gilded with 24 carat gold leaf.
