RIDDLE Journal VI
The “RIDDLES” Collection is a fusion of methodical construction and experimental decoration.
In the process of working, the hands are kept busy but the mind sometimes tends to wander. Questions emerge, doubts creep in and contradictions begin to make sense. What is the best way to bind a book? What materials to choose? To simply decorate or to express oneself? Isn’t expression art? Am I an artist or a craftsman? Do I win or lose if I choose to call myself one or the other? When do I become a Master? When others say it or when I start to believe myself? To create for others or for myself? Embrace tradition or push it away? Impulsive or methodical? Proud or humble?
In the end, the storm in the mind doesn’t hinder the drive of the hands to create something, whatever it is. They just make. The end result however is a riddle in need of an answer.
The small journals burst with abstraction on the outside but offer calm and simplicity on the inside.
The journal is sewn on 3 bands with quality linen thread, consisting of 12 signatures of 32 pages, making a total volume of 384 pages. The paper is 80 gsm, archival quality, cream colored, smooth and a joy to write with a dip pen, fountain pens or pencil. The endpapers are decorated with hand-made paper leaves, made here in the workshop from recycled paper left by previous works. They’re attached to the book body by sewing through their leather joint.
The cover boards are constructed from two 2.5 cm thick pieces of millboard. They are sculpted and tied to the book body via the 3 bands. The book edges are sprinkled with a solution of potassium permanganate.
The book is bound with a fine quality, oxblood colored goatskin, with printed grain, vegetable tanned goatskins with a semi-aniline 2-tone finish.
The endbands are a remix of the emblematic the Gothic weave technique but done with thick linen thread, rather than leather strips. They’re sewn through a hemp cord core, sewn onto to the book body and embelished with a row of glass beads in warm autumn colors.
The decoration on the leather is done with silver leaf and 23.5 carat gold leaf, firmly fixated with a lacquer technique to the surface. It’s completely water, scratch and touch resistant.
The journal is with dimensions of 10.5 x 8 x 3.5 cm or 4.1 x 3.2 x 1.4 inches.
